What is Proxmox Virtual Environment?
Proxmox Virtual Environment (Proxmox VE) is an open-source server virtualisation platform designed for organisations that want to consolidate workloads, simplify infrastructure management and build scalable virtualised environments without relying on proprietary hypervisor platforms.
Proxmox VE combines KVM virtual machines and Linux Containers (LXC) with integrated clustering, high availability, software-defined storage, networking and backup capabilities. Everything is managed through a central web interface, command line interface or REST API.
Key features
-
Virtual Machines
Run Windows and Linux workloads using KVM-based virtual machines with near-native performance
-
Linux Containers
Deploy lightweight, isolated Linux environments using LXC.
-
High Availability
Build clustered environments with automated resource management and HA capabilities.
-
Software-Defined Storage
Support technologies including Ceph, ZFS, NFS, iSCSI and other storage architectures.
-
Software-Defined Networking
Build flexible virtual networking environments with VLANs, SDN and advanced network capabilities.
-
Backup & Recovery
Integrate with Proxmox Backup Server for efficient backup, recovery and data protection.
-
Centralised Management
Manage nodes, VMs, containers, storage and clusters through a single web-based interface.
-
Automation
Use REST APIs, CLI tools and automation technologies to integrate Proxmox VE into wider infrastructure workflows.
Why choose Proxmox?
-
An open-source alternative
Proxmox VE provides an open-source approach to server virtualisation, giving you greater control over your virtualisation platform and underlying infrastructure.
-
Reduce infrastructure complexity
Virtualisation, clustering, storage, networking and management are brought together within a single software-defined platform.
-
Scale as requirements grow
Start with a single server and expand into multi-node clusters as workloads and infrastructure requirements increase.
-
Deploy on your infrastructure
Proxmox VE can be deployed across a wide range of x86 server hardware and integrated with different storage and networking architectures.
-
Built for modern data centres
Proxmox VE provides the foundation for virtualised compute infrastructure without tying you to a proprietary hardware appliance or hypervisor ecosystem.
-
Avoid vendor lock-in
Proxmox VE gives you visibility and control over your virtualisation environment, without being locked into a proprietary platform.
How is Proxmox VE licensed?
-
Proxmox VE is licensed per socket, not per CPU
Proxmox VE subscriptions are licensed according to the number of physical CPU sockets in use. Licensing is based on sockets rather than CPU cores.
-
Cluster nodes use same use same subscription level
For clustered environments, each server/node requires a subscription based on its occupied physical CPU sockets, and nodes within a cluster must use the same subscription level.

Need more than the Proxmox subscription?
VSPL can help specify the servers, storage and networking infrastructure required to run Proxmox VE effectively — whether you're building a single virtualisation host, replacing an existing hypervisor environment or designing a highly available virtualised data centre.
